Paramount For Governance, Economic and Society Development – Uba

Experts have called for more inclusion of women in government and the education of the female gender; for the advancement of the family in particular and society in general.

They made the call Saturday during the Inwelle Centre 12th Annual Symposium held in Enugu, with the theme: “Strengthening the core values of women as change-makers through global citizenship and education for all”.

Speaking on the theme: “Clash of cultures: How gender-sexuality domination under develops communities,” a governance expert and professional accountant, Mr Chiwuike Uba, said that it was high time some cultures were reviewed and abolished; as “they affect women’s contribution to national developments”.

Uba, who is also the Founder of Amaka Chiwuike-Uba Foundation (ACUF), said that Nigeria practices a patriarchal system where “a woman can be a president of an association, governor, local government chairman, summoning all male meetings, including village and town union presidents, but cannot sit in the meeting of the town/village as soon as she goes to her town”.

He said that Nigeria has the largest number of children out-of-school in the world, with lack of a safe environment for adolescent girls, who fear corporal punishment or worse forms of violence, bullying or humiliation and sanitary facilities.

He added that 47% of Nigerian women are mothers before they reach 20, while one in three of all women and girls aged 15-24 have been a victim of violence, even as revealed that women who have never married are more likely to have been attacked than married women.

He said that, in addition to over $95billion lost yearly from economies in sub-Saharan Africa, because women have lower participation in the paid labour force, “the exclusion of women leads to a 12% and 40% loss in global average output per worker and the labor force income per capita respectively”.

He said that men tend to dominate and subdue women in society by reserving the right to take disciplinary measures against them when they err, placing more value on male children over their female counterpart, even as he said that society itself holds a woman responsible for making a marriage work and only complete when married with a male child.

He said: “The institution of the traditional ruler, especially in Igboland, is also complicit in this male domination, but inconsistent with the tenets of its British origin. Women are suppressed as mere spectators on matters of rural/communal development: because of their sex. With a vast majority of Africans still in the rural areas, it is easy to estimate how this inhibitive rural culture can constitute a serious drag on the overall development of the society.

“The recent Supreme Court of Nigeria landmark judgment on matters of women inheritance, especially landed assets, is great progress towards removing the remaining vestiges of exclusion. However, there are still so much to be done to fast-track the elimination of the clash of cultures on gender-sexuality domination, thereby unleashing the fullest potentials of women’s contribution to development.”
